Restraints/dummy kinematics

Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy moved toward the driver door and its head hit the B-pillar.

Injury measures

Measures taken from the neck, chest, and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the dummy’s head that occurred when the head moved forward into the airbag indicate that injuries to the head would be possible. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low.

Pontiac Grand Prix

Star Trek.

The least subtle of these measures has to be toupees. I mean, really, when was the last time you were fooled into thinking the person had a real head of hair and not a dead raccoon on his head?

Road test: 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix Back to video

Trying to avoid a midlife crisis of its own, Pontiac redesigned the Grand Prix for 1997 on the same General Motors midsize, front-wheel-drive platform that debuted nine years earlier, or four generations of Honda Accord ago. (Despite its best-before date having come and gone, this platform was updated yet again for the latest Grand Prix launched in 2004.)

Unlike the sedan-only Buicks and Oldsmobiles of the day, the Pontiac came as a two-door coupe as well. Both coupe and sedan offered V-6 engines and four-speed automatic transmissions. The base SE sedan had a 3.1-litre V6. Find a midlevel GT coupe or sedan and you get as standard a 3.8-litre six that was optional in the SE.

Whereas these Grand Prix models duked it out in the family-car trenches with the Accord, the Chevrolet Impala, Chrysler Intrepid, Ford Taurus and Toyota Camry, the top-of-the-line, high-performance Grand Prix GTP promised even more Pontiac “excitement.”

Targeted at stalwarts such as Acura’s TL and Nissan’s Maxima, the GTP came loaded for bear with its 3.8-litre six supercharged to produce 240 horsepower.

Acceleration is OK with the 3.1 model and better with the 3.8. But with the supercharged mill, you’d better hold on to that hairpiece, as the GTP reportedly can get to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds. But like an old geezer trying to keep up with the kids, the GTP engine’s decades-old pushrod technology makes plenty of noise when on the move.

The saving grace is the Grand Prix’s transmission. Typically GM, it swaps cogs smoothly and crisply for passing manoeuvres. It also helps the Grand Prix get decent fuel consumption for such a powerful car. Between city and highway driving, expect 12 and eight litres per 100 km for the non-supercharged models, and 13 and nine for the more powerful GTP.

Technically no broader than its midsized GM mates, the car stays flat in the corners because of Pontiac’s “widetrack” handling setup. But it skips over rough Canadian roads, with the impact easily being felt inside the cockpit. Stick with an SE or GT if you want a more comfortable, compliant ride.

Interiors in 1997-2003 Grand Prix models use well-made materials with soft-touch plastics. Problem is, especially with the stiffly sprung GTP, Grand Prixs squeak and rattle more than a bag of empty Red Bull cans.

Compared to import competitors, both the coupe and sedan offer good room for four middle-age-sized adults. Five’s a squeeze, though.

Limited legroom and a low, short rear seat don’t help either. A Taurus or Intrepid offers more stretch-out room here.

Another differentiator of the Grand Prix is relatively poor build quality and long-term durability. Between 1999 and 2001, GM issued three recalls involving air bag-inflator modules that can explode, and on 2000 models, some seatbelt assemblies were not properly produced. Defective cruise control modules and misfiring 3.8-litre engines on 1997-98 Grand Prixs and faulty transmissions on 1998 models are two reasons to consider later-vintage Grand Prixs. And beware of white 1997-99 Grand Prix cars: Their door handles turn yellow from the lock-cylinder grease.

And lordy, lordy, look who turned 40! For 2002, a Grand Prix 40th Anniversary Package was released, which included the usual nip and tuck job with a rear spoiler, hood ducts and chrome wheels. Dark cherry paint and unique red-and-grey interior trim was also ladled on. What better gift for a middle-aged midsizer?

With old-school Pontiac styling cues, big V-6 engines and so-called “widetrack” handling, the 1997-2003 Grand Prix alludes to being a sporty ride for the young. Look under the rug, however, and you’ll get a different picture.

Transmission: Four-speed automatic

Safety: Four-wheel disc brakes with antilock, traction control, dual front air bags

NHTSA frontal impact rating (maximum five stars): Driver, 4; passenger 4 (1999)

Recalls: Windshield wipers may stop working (1997). Faulty power steering bearings, resulting in difficulty turning steering wheel (1997-98). When the hazard-flasher switch is used, retained accessory power feature can be activated without key in the ignition (1997-99). Driver’s air bag inflator modules could produce excessive internal pressure. In crash, the inflator module can explode (1999). Front-passenger air bag modules have undersized inflator orifice — in a crash, this can cause inflator module to explode (2000). Seatbelt assemblies were not properly heat-treated and do not pass load-bearing requirement (2000). Passenger air bag inflator modules were built without the correct amount of explosive. Air bag explosion or failure could occur (2001). Right rear brake hose may be too loose, resulting in loss of brake fluid (2003).

The Pontiac Grand Prix and Buick Century and Regal were redesigned for the 1997 model year, and the Oldsmobile Intrigue was introduced in the 1998 model year.

The Intrigue was dropped after the 2002 model year, the Regal after the 2004 model year, and the Century after the 2005 model year. The Grand Prix was redesigned for the 2004 model year.

The dummy’s position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver’s survival space was maintained reasonably well.

There was too much upward movement of the steering wheel.

The head restraint/seatback combination is specially designed to mitigate whiplash injury. This restraint has proven effective in crash tests.

    1997 Pontiac Grand Prix Overview

Looking for a Used Grand Prix in your area?

CarGurus has 446 nationwide Grand Prix listings starting at $1,799.

    1997 Pontiac Grand Prix Overview

Bigger, better, and bossier, the 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix sits on a new Wide Track W platform that it shares with the Buick Century. A longer and wider wheelbase increases cabin room for more passenger comfort, but also improves handling and overall stability on the road.
The 1997 Grand Prix is offered as a base SE, GT, or GTP package sedan and a GT and GTP coupe. While the SE sedan retains the previous 3.1-liter, 160-hp V6 and is reserved more for fleet use, the GT sedan and coupe gets a whole new 3800 engine. The 3.8-liter V6 hits 195-hp on its own, but with the GTP supercharged package, that gets boosted to 240-hp. Though all models come only with a 4-speed automatic, in the GTP Pacakge, you’re able to choose between normal and performance modes.

Other changes to the 1997 Grand Prix include standard ABS brakes, dual front and side impact airbags, and traction control on all models (the GTP does not have traction control). A restyled knob-happy dashboard suffers a little from overkill, but nice options such as the heads-up display are driver favorites. Standard on all trims, even the SE, are power locks, windows, and mirrors, air conditioning, fog lights, a driver information center, and daytime running lights. The GT adds leather trim, variable effort steering, and cruise control.

The 1997 Grand Prix has benefited greatly from its redesign, becoming a more powerful, more stylish, and more popular car. The new 3.8 V6 is a hit with drivers who are looking for speed, instant acceleration, and a sporty feel. Handling is praised, and the extra elbow and legroom in the car is much appreciated. But Pontiac seems not to have addressed the issues which have bothered Grand Prix owners for a while, namely the cheap plastic parts that break easily. Door panels are the biggest culprit. Build quality and extensive repairs are common complaints.
